In order to send files to Fancy's FTP site, you will need an FTP client application. Several are available for the Macintosh. One such program, Fetch, will be described here. If you do not have Fetch, you can use your web browser to download the file from the following site:

    http://fetchsoftworks.com

The current version of Fetch as of this writing is 4.0.3. You should be running Mac OS 8.5 or greater.

  • After you have downloaded the installer, run the installer application. You can choose the standard installation.
  • You will find a folder on your hard drive called "Fetch 4.0.3 Folder". Within that folder, double-click the "Fetch 4.0.3" application.
  • A New Connection window will open by default. In the Host field, type the following ftp address: ftp.bowtieinc.com.
  • Please contact your sales rep or our preflight department for the latest FTP log-in information.
  • Click OK.
  • Another window should open up, showing you folders where you can send and receive files. The folders are arranged by magazine title. For example, if you are dealing with files for Dog Fancy, you should double-click the "dogfancy" folder.
  • Double-clicking a folder will open that folder. Double-clicking a file will download that file. If you double-click a wrong folder by mistake, you can back up a level by using the pop-up bar within the window.
  • Art directors should send and receive their files to the subfolder called "editorial". Advertisers should send their files to the subfolder called "ads".
  • To receive a set of files, simply click on the file you are interested in and drag and drop them onto your desktop. To select multiple files, click on the first file and shift click subsequent files before dragging them to your desktop.
  • To send files to the ftp site, select them from your hard drive and drop them into the window that represents the folder where you want to place your files.
  • NOTE: You will need to use a program like StuffIt Deluxe (or DropStuff) to compress your files into an archive. Performing this step will protect the file during the FTP process.
  • Apple now includes DropStuff on your Macintosh hard drive. If you don't have DropStuff, you can download DropStuff from the following address: http://www.aladdinsys.com/dropstuff/macindex.html
  • See the DropStuff instructions on how to use DropStuff. You should use BinHex (.hqx) or MacBinary (.bin) format for use with FTP sites.
