4 - Digital ad file does not match hardcopy proof
A hardcopy proof is required for all digital ads. A black and white laser proof or fax copy will be sufficient to proof ad content only. Color proofs are not required, however, the color quality of the ad in print will relate directly to the quality of the proof provided. Kodak Approvals and Matchprints are the most accurate; color laser and inkjet prints provide general reference only.
An electronically transmitted file can encounter numerous problems. One source of potential problems is your software's preferences, they must match our preferences otherwise a number of errors may occur. A few examples would be re-flowed text, overflowing text boxes, typefaces displayed with wrong fonts, and graphic elements missing or skewed.
A hard copy proof provides a reference for preflight to make adjustments if needed. It is imperative that the hard copy proof precisely match your digital ad file. If you decide to make changes to your ad after we have received your digital file, a new digital file with a new hard copy proof must be submitted that reflects those changes.
5 - Non-acceptable software applications
Fancy only accepts native files from the three software packages that are currently in use at Fancy Publications: QuarkXpress, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. Files created in other software programs must be converted into a TIFF, EPS, or PDF format before processing.
6 - Fonts
Missing screen or printer fonts
If an ad contains any font other then Adobe Type 1 Postscript the supporting files for that font must be supplied. A complete and usable Postscript font is comprised of two parts, the screen font and the printer font. The screen font enables the font to be accurately displayed on-screen, while the printer font is required for final printed output. Both elements must be supplied.
True Type fonts
Due to industry-wide problems when outputting to high-end imagesetters, True Type fonts are not acceptable. If you have used them in your ad they will be substituted with a similar font (if one is available) or converted to a Type 1 Postscript font at our discretion.
PC fonts
Fancy works on the Apple Macintosh platform. PC Postscript fonts are generally not usable. The two screen and printer font equivalents on the PC are identified by the extensions .PFB and .PFM. These fonts are unacceptable for the Apple Macintosh platform. If PC fonts are supplied by the advertiser, substitutions will be made at our discretion.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND US YOUR ENTIRE FONT LIBRARY. SEND ONLY THE FONTS USED TO CREATE THE AD YOU ARE SUBMITTING.
7 - Missing images or graphics
Ads created in page layout programs such as QuarkXPress and Adobe Illustrator are created in part by linking low resolution placement files (what is viewed on screen) to the actual high resolution file (located on the hard drive). This minimizes the file size when page layouts have numerous or complicated graphics. All graphic and image files must be submitted with ad. Adobe Illustrator provides the option of embedding images and or graphics into the ad which enables the user to send just one file (this technique is detailed in the Tips & Techniques section). Note: QuarkXPress does not support embedded high resolution images.
